Moss in my pitcher!

Having just revealed my obsession with all things hygienic, look at my water pitcher!! This is Brita-filtered White City water, sick!
This is the third time it's happened. Last week I thought I noticed a greenish tint at the bottom of the pitcher but decided it was just a weird reflection off the counter. By the end of this week I was sure it was moss--it's fuzzy on close inspection--so I let it grow for the past 3 days so it would show up in the picture.

It's not as though I don't wash the darn thing, everytime I change the filter I wash the whole thing and let it air dry.
I like to drink my water at room temperature so I don't keep it in the fridge, but it's not like I keep it in the sun and fertilize it once a week! I'm completely grossed out that my tap water has pond scum in it, shouldn't cholrination kill it? What other microscopic life forms are swimming around in there? Maybe it's the filter? Honestly!
I've over-fed myself in typical Sunday fashion and killed my brain thus I have no clever posts for today. I'm sure I'll talk myself out of homework sometime this week and post sometime other than Wednesday. It's become an addiction. At work I think about blog-worthy items, during class and alas, sometimes during church, my thoughts drift to the blog. Concerning.

  1. That is so gross. Now you have me thinking what is in my water too.

You were so funny yesterday with Talasha. I love it when RS is more livened up. What do you think?

  2. I suppose since I already eat cat fur I might as well drink mossy water too. But seriously that is gross. I made Megan go get tons of bottled water today.

You were hilarious in RS yesterday. Do you remember what the lesson was about or were you thinking about blog worthy items? I couldn't stay awake. It's a good thing Megan was there to poke me and pull my eyes open.

  3. Cyanobacteria? Algae? Just adds to your intestinal flora. Makes it easier to digest birthday cake. Happy Birthday.

  5. The same thing happens in our Brita pitcher, and we have yummy Seattle water. We keep ours on the (cold) counter and after a while it gets a greenish tint but I just wipe it out and it's good for another few weeks. When I lived with Christine we kept her pitcher in the fridge and it got an orangey red tint, but that was probably from the rusty water in the apartment. I think it's just what happens with standing water. Make sure to use it up and change the water frequently I guess.

    Happy Birthday!!

  6. I do like it when RS is a little more lively, and yes, I was thinking about the blog (only until I caught myself doing it) during the lesson! "Hi, my name is Sonja and I'm addicted to blogging."

Maybe it's the Brita filter, I have water in my basement that's been there for years--albeit in much lower light, but it does get light--that has not gotten mossy.

    Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  7. I have been giving this some thought and I believe that the Brita filters work very well and are designed to filter out all elements including chlorine and if that is the case there is nothing left in the water to inhibit the growth of moss, pond scum or algae (whatever you want to call it). A working theory of mine, I have not any proofs to back my claim.

  8. I just emptied out our pitcher last night and there was green stuff not only on the bottom but also on the white part where the filter sits in the water. Gross. Time to wash it I guess.

  9. i have almost the exact same pitcher and i have never gotten any of this weird green moss or anything like it... perhaps it's just white city water. which is weird because i've always thought white city water was so much better than sanpete water! (sanpete water is gross)
