Cinders everywhere.
I love toast, I eat it nearly everyday. I had a $10 toaster from Kmart that lasted me about 10yrs but near the end of its life I had to toast my bread twice at the highest setting in order to get it even mildly crisp.
My mother gave me a toaster for Christmas in 2007!
I went through half a loaf of bread trying to figure out how to not burn it. Judge me not--I was conditioned by years of inferior toasting.
During 2008 I gained mastery over the toaster; however, half slices of bread apparently toast more quickly. That makes no sense whatsoever.
In an attempt to include whole grains in my diet I decided to try corn tortillas. Not so good when microwaved.
With great caution/restraint I tried toasting a tortilla at level 1. Nothing.
I turned it up to 2.
Leathery.
Fearing level 3, I toasted again at level 2.
Closer to crunchy.
One last time at level two and suddenly there was black smoke billowing through the kitchen.
Luckily, I had a box fan sitting in the kitchen which I hastily used to direct as much smoke as possible into the garage. My house reeked of smoke for days.
I have experimented with different settings, frozen and room temperature tortillas. Perhaps they weren't meant to be toasted.
Please don't pressure me to buy a crock pot.
why on earth would you even think that you could put a tortilla in a toaster, that is what i would like to know...
ReplyDeletei think you should either get a tortilla cooker or just put it in the oven for a couple minutes...
*shaking head* tortillas in toasters...
Not so bad...that piece of toast is charred!!! I myself have toasted many a tortilla actually...successfully. Procedure: fold in half and then half again. The outside gets toasted...then refold until you get two sides that haven't been toasted...repeat until toasted. The inside stays protected from the heat so the parts that were already toasted won't spontaneously combust.
ReplyDeleteOR...why don't you just toast your tortilla in a frying pan on the stove top like a normal individual???
I have never thought of toasting a tortilla in a toaster. But I have had a lot of experience with burning things and certainly can relate.

ReplyDeleteAwesome! Martha Stewart has nothing over you...well, there was that prison incident. Let us not judge.
ReplyDeleteFrying pans have to be washed, is this not obvious?
ReplyDeleteKelly anne--awake at 2:01 AM on a school night??
ReplyDeleteDoes the pan really need to be washed if you just put a dry tortilla in it? Where's the greasy residue?
ReplyDeleteMoreover, why are you eating a corn tortilla? Does it taste good? Isn't there anything else you can eat to get whole grains, like whole grain bread, or some granola?
I have happy memories of making corn tortillas in 3rd grade after watching a movie about Indians grinding corn.
ReplyDeleteOh, for some reason I thought we were talking flour tortilla. I've never put a corn tortilla in the toaster. But I second Maria's logic. How come you don't think like us?? You know we know everything. The frying pan shall require NO WASHING after putting a DRY CORN tortilla in it. Isn't that obvious. It leaves absolutely NO residue!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLet me clarify: I want a CRISPY tortilla. This cannot be achieved in a frying pan without oil (that I know of.) I think a house fire might result if I were to attempt it.
ReplyDeleteIf you want crispy like a chip then you'll have to use oil. Are you getting a crispy tortilla in the toaster? A dry frying pan does the same thing as a toaster, it just does it one side at a time. Did you know you can make toast in a dry frying pan too?
ReplyDeletecrystelle - I just read back through your directions for your multi-fold, multi-step tortilla toasting. Sounds like a lot of work. What about 15 seconds in the microwave? Or better yet - a toaster oven. Great for warming up tortillas or a slice of pizza or making toast. I use ours every day.
ReplyDeleteof course i was awake at 2:01 on a school night... you and kelly seem to be uber surprised by this... bed time for me is between 3 and 4... yay college!
